In 1938, German Fuhrer Adolf Hitler announced that he had acquired the Sudetenland from Czechoslovakia, raising serious concerns about European peace and order. German diplomat Paul von Hartmann (Janis Niewohner) was part of the resistance movement in Germany against Hitler. When he found a damning copy of Hitler's megalomaniacal plans for world domination, he knew he had to do something.
Paul's best friend from Oxford, Hugh Leggatt (George Mackay), works as a private secretary to British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain (Jeremy Irons). Chamberlain was still reeling from the tragedy of the last great war (World War I) and pushing his peacekeeping agenda, so he was delighted when Hitler agreed to meet with Mussolini and the Italian prime minister. When you see a WWII movie like Schindler's List (1993) or Saving Private Ryan (1998), it's usually about a war that already took place. It is rare to see a film about the peace situation in Europe on the eve of World War II. Although it is a novel in this case, it was interesting to know that there were attempts to stop Hitler's evil plans before they were carried out .
Of course, whenever Chamberlain came out, Jeremy Irons owned the screen. The film portrays the sympathetic British Prime Minister with great thought and dignity as he narrates what goes through his mind as he searches for the extra document signed to make peace with Hitler. This was a source of laughter for Chamberlain, who seems to have been deliberately deceived by Hitler, but who is portrayed here in a very positive light.
Paul and Hugh talking loudly about Hitler in a crowded German bar was very melodic. The scene where Paul meets Hugh "in secret" was incredible. But overall, the story is well told by German director Christian Schwokoff, paying attention to contemporary details in the production design. Makes you want to read more about this time in history. 7/10
