Netflix: Review of THE IN BETWEEN: Afterlife Angst

Tessa (Joey King) is recovering from a car accident involving her and her boyfriend Skylar (Kyle Allen). Skylar didn't survive, which terrified Tessa. He once experienced extraordinary paranormal phenomena using a camera, cell phones in the exam room, and his car's GPS system. Tessa is certain Skylar was trying to contact her "from somewhere in between".

While the present story concerns Skylar's ghostly appearances on Tessa, the development of their love story was told in flashbacks. It all started with a cinema that showed classic films twice a month. Tessa saw a screening of the French film Betty Blue (1986) but there were no English subtitles. Skylar, a multilingual athlete, sat next to him and offered to translate it line by line.

The best scenes in this film are the rowing competition scene, the driving scene (which debuts INXS' “Never Tear Us Apart”) and the rowing boat scene. Lake Joey King, 22, and Kyle Allen, 27,' romantic chemistry was at its best during these carefree and happy times. They may not be the most important plots, but their cinematography and music are very well done.

On the other hand, the supernatural aspects of the story were told clumsily. I don't think we can expect too much logic from the paranormal story elements, but they didn't translate to the screen very well. Those scenes are sustained only by Joey King's responsive performances and the bubbly energy of Celeste O'Connor (first appearing in last year's Ghostbusters: Afterlife) as Tessa's best friend, Shannon.

There have been many quotes about love. Tessa's photography had an artistic flair. Another touching moment was Tessa's difficult childhood and her adoptive parents, with whom she never communicated. The medical side of Tessa's literally broken heart ended up being utterly melodramatic and compelling. Tessa's revolutionary decision seems puzzling considering what she went through to get to this point. 6/10
