purple heart

Director: Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum

Casey Salazar (Sofia Carson) is the lead singer for her band The Loyal, and works as a waitress to pay the bills while they wait for their big break. However, he ran out of diabetes medication and had no money or insurance. She heard that soldiers' wives have many health benefits, so she asks US Marine Corps Sgt. Luke Morrow (Nicholas Galtzen) if she can marry him before he goes to Iraq. Locke had a lot of debt, so he accepted her offer for additional income.

Under the guise of a romantic drama, the film deals with a rather serious issue of embezzlement of public funds for personal gain by exploiting loopholes in the system. It was uncomfortable seeing what they had to do to make their fake marriage reasonable because their feelings for each other fluctuated from one extreme to the other. The ending was usually Netflix, unrealistic due to their very different worldviews. Casey's songs weren't bad, actually catchy, but I'm not sure these songs could make a Rose Bowl party. 5/10.

See all the ways

Director: Wanuri Kahiu

Natalie Bennett (Lili Reinhart) has planned her whole life. After graduating from college, she moves to Los Angeles with her friend Kara (Aisha Dee) and pursues her dream job of becoming an animator. However, she has one night with her supposed platonic friend Gabby (Danny Ramirez) just for fun. A week later, Nat started feeling nauseous and vomiting, so she took a pregnancy test. The film is then divided into two tracks that show what happens in Natty's life if the test is positive or negative.

African Kenyan director Wanori Kahyo has produced a well-written and beautifully voiced film about the two potential paths a woman can take in life, whether she is pregnant or not. Kahui seamlessly switches scenes between a pregnant Nat in Texas and a non-pregnant Nat in Los Angeles, showing both good and evil in alternating timelines. This type of storytelling has been done before in films like The Rolling Doors (1998), the latter being the archetype of a Netflix love story, but Kahiu's brilliant direction and Reinhart's subtle performance lifted it. 7/10.
