Netflix: Mini-Reviews of NICE VIEW and INCANTATION: Challenging Childcare
July 12, 2022
Two Chinese films premiered on Netflix this month, both about a 6-year-old girl with special needs and her lover who, against all odds, takes care of her.
Having earned a whopping $ 211 million since the launch of the Chinese New Year last February, Nice View is now one of the biggest box office hits of 2022 worldwide. The Conjuring has earned a modest $ 5.7 million since its release in March, but that was enough to make it Taiwan's highest-grossing film this year.

BEAUTIFUL STAGE
Country: China
Directed by Wen Muye
When her mother died, 20-year-old Jing Hao promised to take care of her younger sister. Tongtong (Chen Hali) had a congenital heart defect and for the past six years Jing Hao has been advised by a doctor that he would have to undergo corrective surgery before he turned eight or his condition would get worse for him.
However, due to his cell phone repair shop and other odd jobs, Jing Hao simply couldn't earn the money he needed. He had to think outside the box and use crazy ideas that no one had tried before. He relied on his meticulous technical ability, uncompromising attitude and good relations with his neighbors to carry out his daring plan.
Lead actor Jackson Yi is Taiwan's multimedia superstar. His first major international film breakthrough came in 2019, when his film Better Days was nominated for an Academy Award. This year, he starred in two of China's highest-grossing films, Battle of Lake Changjin II (currently # 5 on the world rankings) and Beautiful View. Yin Jing Hao's character is serious and energetic, challenging to watch, but not melodramatic. 8/10.

TRANSITION
Country: Taiwan
Directed by Kevin Koch
Ronan (Cai Xuan-ye) was recovering in a psychiatric hospital and was ready to be reunited with his daughter Dodo (Huang Xin-ting), who grew up in a foster family run by Ming (Cao Ying-hsuan). . . However, when Dodo was with Ronan, he began to behave strangely and "see" invisible creatures called "villains".
Ronan realized that these paranormal phenomena are connected to the events of six years ago. He accompanied his friend Doma (Sean Lee) and his cousin Yuan (RQ) as they returned to their village for some mysterious family rituals. They started filming their YouTube channel, breaking religious taboos.
Director Kevin Koch has used a newfound style of footage (mainly home video and security cameras) to tell his heartbreaking story as he travels back and forth in time. Bringing a Nice Guy makes the situation even more tense. Ronan broke the fourth wall to engage his audience and join him in singing "Hou-ho-xiu-yi, si-sei-wu-ma", adding more hiss. The cursed video in the cursed tomb was a great ending. 7/10.
