KTX: Review of ILOCANO DEFENDERS: WAR ON KIDNAPPING: Crusading Congressmen

February 6, 2022

A family of brave members of Congress (father Michael Say and his two sons Solomon and Morgan) call themselves the Ilocano Defenders and are dedicated to helping and defending the weak and oppressed. When a wave of child abductions erupted in northern Luzon, the Defenders were at the forefront of the fight, even as the union extended its operations to other parts of the country.

These three incredibly noble representatives of the Ilocano Defenders party list have been described as the pinnacle of political perfection. They were fearless (they beat the bad guys with martial arts only), generous (they gave up their salary to help the poor), ethical (they refused to pay three million pesos a month in bribes) and extremely sensitive to their needs. . Founders (those who bear the funeral and hospital expenses).

There were no professional actors in the film, so everything had a tense and believable vibe. All three pushed their idealistic lines (support for VAT on essential goods and postal requirements in public schools) but were still camera-conscious. The villains were particularly over the top, therefore unintentionally funny, most notably Governor Armand Guzman Jr. (Renaldo Samaco), his personal assistant Roel (Narciso Dizon), the kidnapper Mr. M (played by director Marvin Leyson). himself) and his irresistible companion Jesser (Jeser Abao).

There were several scenes that emphasized how dangerous their job was, not only by their enemies, but also by women like the secretaries of Morgan Marna (Ana Mariz Terezos) and Rochelle (Ruchelle Borbajo) and Solo's friend (? ) Casey (Grace). . . So there were scenes where they repeatedly told each other to take better care of themselves. They also said they were ready to address any issues related to the misappropriation of public funds or allegations of sexual violence.

Production was completed with location shots in Cebu, Baguio, Vigan, Ifugao, Poway, General Santos City and Jolo. However, the overall pace was too slow, the editing was sloppy, and the direction was blurry. The three may be black belts in taekwondo in real life, but the choreography of their fight scenes lacked excitement, which may be at odds with the goal of reviving martial art in Filipino cinema.
