JACK RYAN, BEGINS
Paramount Pictures / USA / 105 minutes / Kenneth Branagh / 2.39:1
confess Jack Ryan is your run-of-the-mill Hollywood spy franchise that has never been able to maintain its popularity among newer franchises. His name may never have been as well-known as Jason Bourne, Ethan Hunt or James Bond, although famous actors such as Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin and two-time Oscar winner Ben Affleck were once Jack Ryan.
So Paramount as the licensee of Jack Ryan's books is late. Tom Clancy didn't want it to last long. After The Sum of All Fears (2002), which audiences found too heavy-handed because it was too faithful to the novel's style, Paramount decided to reboot the franchise by hiring Chris Pine to fill in for Jack Ryan's long-abandoned alter ego. . .
Ditch the convoluted political narratives that are pre-accurate, because Chris Pine's Jack Ryan is a pure spy thriller , not adapted from some scratch Tom Clancy novel. The story isn't complicated, Jack Ryan is a teenager who doesn't want to get a doctorate while lecturing economics in order to protect his country. But, unfortunately, a fatal accident prevented him from becoming a soldier again. Years later, Harper (Kevin Costner) sends Jack to join the CIA as an economic analyst and deal with a Wall Street terrorist. The first mission is terrorist Viktor (Kenneth Branagh), a forgotten Russian tycoon who embezzled his money to make a deal to blow up America.
A reboot is never far from the words "change," "sharp," and "180 degrees." Changes are happening. Just look at Christopher Nolan's Batman-verse franchise, the Star Trek duos, or the same genre of films, Casino Royale, which is so different from its previous medium yet still grows from the same roots. There are nice changes for newcomers, and there are those that alienate loyal fans from the fan club. This change happened with Jack Ryan's character, but mostly in a negative way. While Kenneth Branagh knows how to make fun and exciting action movies, just look at The Adventures of Thor, he doesn't know how to make memorable spy movies. More precisely, I don't see how to introduce this Jack Ryan character to a new generation of viewers so that he wholeheartedly sits on the level of James Bond and Jason Bourne. But the real fault lies in the structure of the script, which fails to deliver an exciting plot and fails to move in the same direction as Tom Clancy's novels so that fans feel they are still in the familiar home. The screenplay, written by David Capp and Adam Cassad, is limited to action as the driving force of the story, from point A to point B, with the introduction of exciting action scenes, but without the twists that should have played a role in the sponge. sponge film. This possibility of a reboot itself was never used as an opportunity to introduce a new Jack Ryan that was more relevant to the current generation and other secret agent characters. The intro actually feels cheesy, lacks sensationalism and rushes the movie straight into the hashtag of the main plot, although as a rebooted movie, the introduction of iconic characters and universe like Jack Ryan is very important. In short , there are no memorable characters.
But don't blame Chris Pine, he infused Ray with his action- hero charm and charisma to bring to life Jack Ryan, a small-faced economic analyst who puts up a good fight. Kenneth Branagh, in the role of the villain, was also able to make people happy on the screen with his terrible charm and ear-tingling Russian accent. Kevin Costner plays the other members, as well as the commander (as if he was born for it), not to forget his fatherly aura to the character of Jack Ryan, who managed to awaken the audience that Harper's character can be trusted. Keira Knightley, damn, this role is about as subtle as a stereotypical Hollywood woman you can think of.
Overall, as a fun, entertaining film, Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit succeeds in its mission brilliantly. Trust me, the series of spy action scenes will never let you get bored watching Jack Ryan's "first class" adventure from start to finish. And how interesting is director Jack Ryan's mediocre film? Oh no.
