STUDY FATHER

Directed by Rosalind Ross

Screenplay: Rosalind Ross

Stuart Long (Mark Wahlberg) is an amateur boxer who lives in Montana with his mother, Kathleen (Jacki Weaver). As boxing went all over the place , Stuart moved to Hollywood, where his alcoholic father Bill (Mel Gibson) lived, hoping to become an actor. During his daily work at the supermarket, he is touched by the charm of Carmen (Teresa Ruiz). However, before Carmen accepted this as a process, she wanted to be baptized Catholic.

Since then, Stuart has faced a major health crisis, followed by another, even more severe, disability. After seeing the apparition of Our Lady, Stuart felt called to become a priest. His sudden decision doesn't go well with Carmen, who wants him to marry her, or her atheist parents, who lost their trust long ago when they lost another son in their childhood. Despite opposition from Monsignor Kelly (Malcolm McDowell), Stuart steadfastly pursues his dream against all odds.

This biographical film is essentially an old melodrama mixed with Stuart's secular language and his commentary on Catholicism and the priesthood. Mark Wahlberg, now in his 50s, is clearly too old to play Stuart as a young man (the original Stuart died at 50). However, it was here that he experienced a dramatic moment and also underwent a major physical transformation. The poignant surprise at the end is wonderfully implemented. 7/10

STORAGE

director: Martin Campbell

Screenplay: Dario Scardapane

Alex Lewis (Liam Neeson) is one of the best assassins. As he approached the target of securing a final contract, he saw that it was 13-year-old Beatriz (Mia Sanchez). He abandoned his mission and instead went for a drink at a bar and picked up a random woman to spend the night with. The next day he learns that Beatrice has also been killed. However, due to the ongoing battle with Alzheimer's disease, he cannot remember whether he did.

Besides Liam Neeson, there are other household names in this b-action film that I didn't immediately recognize when I watched it here. Guy Pearce who plays Mexican-American plays FBI agent Vincent Serra, who saves Beatriz from his abusive father who used to prostitute her. Monica Bellucci, Morticia Addams' heavily edited double, first played the business character who hired Alex.

For a film called Memory, it's annoying that Alex's Alzheimer's doesn't play a big part in the plot. Instead, we see Alex unconscious, which isn't too surprising since he's usually a 70 year old guy, murderer or not. It's not uncommon for Neeson to play an anti-hero, but it's certainly not surprising that ruthless assassin Alex loves children. 5/10
