Review of NOPE: Alien Alimentation

August 18, 2022

OJ (Daniel Kaluuya) and Em (Keke Parker) Haywood inherit a large farm from their father, Otis Haywood Sr. (Keith David) died in an accident caused by a coin falling from the sky. When they run into financial trouble at the farm, OJ reluctantly sells his trained horses to a small cowboy-themed amusement park nearby, owned by Korean-American child actor Ricky Park (Steven Yoon).

One night, OJ was patrolling the farm when he encountered a strange object in the sky. His presence will cause the horses to react violently and various electrical and other devices in the area will turn on and off. The next day, in order to document the incident, the siblings go to a local electronics store, Frye's, to invest in camera equipment from friendly salesman Angel Torres (Brandon Perea).

Jordan Peele's two previous films, Get Out (2017) and Us (2019), had deeper messages about race and social behavior. In comparison, No told a fairly simple story about an alien in the sky terrorizing the people below. It was not about race. Haywoods happened to be African-American, but this story could have happened to anyone hiding in the unknown.

The characters were interesting and the actors made them very likable. OJ and Em have completely opposite personalities. Daniel Kaluu's OJ was dark and muted, while Keke Parker's Amy was bright and open. Kaluu's unique facial features, especially his hollow eyes, were perfect for the creepy and mysterious atmosphere of this film. Parker's energy always kept the mood going, especially in the slow, talky first movement.

Steven Yoon's Joop Park had a traumatic background that was just a circumstance in an alien story, but he excelled at using his past experiences to be relevant and profitable. The main focus was Angel Torres, played by Filipino-American actor Brandon Perea. He had great screen presence, charming charisma and a sense of humor that should land him leading roles in the future.

The technical aspects of this film were its best asset. The award-winning cinematography by Hoyt Van Hoytham (Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet) was beautiful and breathtaking, capturing the vast misty skies. The film montage with music by Nicolas Monsour (“Biz”) and Michael Abels (“Get Out,” “Gus”) effectively created a sense of menace, fear, and excitement in the alien scenes.

Jordan Peele strangely started the whole movie with a disturbing incident, a chimpanzee going crazy on set, only to come back in the second act to talk more about himself. This issue of animal actors is also discussed in the commercial, which features one of OJ's horses, cameraman Antlers Holst (Michael Wincott) and actress Bonnie Clayton (81-year-old Untie the Knot actress Donna Mills).

Here, Peele paid homage to the art of cinema. Edward Muybridge referred to his 1884-85 photographic study of animal movement called Animal Movement, a forerunner of film, when Em said running in photo 626 was their ancestor. He placed a big old Holst film camera next to Torres' shiny new digital camera. Too bad I haven't seen their movies. 7/10
