Review of LIGHTYEAR: Tougher in Time

Buzz Lightyear (Chris Evans) was a dedicated astronaut under his boss and best friend Alisha Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba). During one of the missions, Buzz calculates a maneuver for his turnip spaceship that disables hyperdrive mode. The accident left their entire group on this alien planet. Meanwhile, a guilt-ridden Buzz continues to figure out how to get the damaged hyperdrive to work properly again.

However, each failed attempt by Buzz to fix the hyperdrive (which lasted only a few minutes) would cost him four years of real time. Every time he returns home after a failure, all his peers continue their lives, grow old, marry, create families. One day, as his mission draws to a close, Buzz Sox (Peter Sohn), a pet cat robot, finally finds the right solution to the problem.

The film opens with a setting that shows how it connects to the original Toy Story movie, where we first meet the character Buzz Lightyear. In 1995, a little boy named Andy received a Buzz Lightyear action figure for his birthday. Buzz was Andy's favorite movie character that year, and it was the same movie. In addition to being an emotional connection for us, this short introduction also explains the film's plot and retro art styles.

Chris Evans voiced Buzz Lightyear when he previously played Captain America. His voice gave Buzz that pure, innocent heroic idealism that made us empathize with his ever-present guilt and root for him in his quest for redemption. Always independent, Buzz initially resisted Sox's AI or his computer, Ivan (Mary Macdonald-Lewis). However, the experience of internal conflict ultimately teaches him the value of humility and teamwork.

The confrontation between Buzz and the villainous Zurg (James Brolin) is reminiscent of their confrontation in Toy Story 2. Izzy (Keke Palmer), a tough member of the Junior Police Patrol, fits the Disney-Pixar heroine formula as she faces her fears and learns life lessons with Buzz. However, I didn't like the goofy humor of his old idols Mo Morrison (Taika Waititi) and Darby Steele (Dale Soules).

The ambiguity of the weather was central to this story, so some plot ideas may have passed us by. Time stood still for one character while others grew old and lived their lives. Subsequently, the character coexisted in two different eras of life. These time highlights are very well crafted for all their dramatic value, so just enjoy the ride without fighting for scientific accuracy. 7/10.
