Review of FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE SECRETS OF DUMBLEDORE: Political Picks

April 16, 2022

The sequel opens with Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) and Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen introduced as Johnny Depp) meeting in a restaurant. "I have fallen in love with you," Dumbledore told Grindelwald during their intimate conversation. This scene actually confirmed author JK Rowling's 2007 revelation that Albus Dumbledore was indeed gay and declared it canon. I think this was the biggest mystery of the title.

The main story of this third installment of the Fantastic Beasts franchise was Albus Dumbledore's attempt to prevent Grindelwald from becoming the Wizard Supreme. This focus on political maneuvering didn't really interest me, and frankly, it was boring. If you haven't seen either of the previous two movies, you won't understand this movie at all. But since this movie is set during a stormy presidential election, you'll see metaphors when explaining the candidates.

Wizard Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), his brother and auror Tesus (Callum Turner), his friend-mage baker Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) and Ilvermorny Charms teacher Lally Hicks (Jessica Williams) are mostly secondary characters. Newt and Theseus' jailbreak scene was funny at first, but it was too long. The Goldstein sisters, Queenie (Alison Sudle) and Tina (Katherine Waterston) were there.

But since this is Fantastic Beasts, it has to be someone who plays an important role in the story. There is a rare Chinese deer-like animal called Qilin. In the wizarding world, clay was used in the selection process because it saw which candidate was pure in spirit and would bow before him. Grindelwald's plan was to kill baby Killy and resurrect him through dark magic so he could win the election.

At 142 minutes, the film was too long for a plot that was clouded by numerous additional subplots such as Aberforth Dumbledore (Richard Coyle) and Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller). Like the previous episodes, it was the special effects that carried the film, except for the parts where Grindelwald's anonymous minions were easy cannon fodder. Mikkelsen matches Law's charisma as his nemesis, but I think Johnny Depp could have done a better Grindelwald. 5/10.
