Review of ELVIS: Knowing the King

June 23, 2022

The King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley had a #1 hit on the Billboard charts beginning with "Heartbreak Hotel" in 1956. This list of pop classics includes timeless rockers like "Hound Dog" (1956) and " Jailhouse Rock". ' (1957), as well as the ballads 'Love Me Tender' (1956) and 'Are You Lonesome Tonight' (1960). A true icon in his own right, Elvis has fans and imitators that persist to this day, 45 years after his death, Patience.

This 2 hour 39 minute biopic follows Elvis Presley's life as a young white boy growing up in a poor black neighborhood, exposing him to upbeat blues and soulful gospel music. As a young man, he absorbed these musical influences and created his own country music with a bluesy twist. His unique look and electrifying live performance took screaming female fans and then the whole country by storm.

On the family side, Elvis was busy with his mother, Gladys (Helen Thomson), father, Vernon (Richard Roxburgh), and wife, Priscilla (Olivia de Jong). In terms of his career, Elvis had to clean up his act as the United States went through the turmoil of the 1960s. While staying at the International Hotel in Vegas, he was put on a grueling schedule that made him dependent on addictive drugs so he could perform the next day.

Rather than follow a typical biographical plan, director and co-writer Baz Luhrmann chose to tell the life story of Elvis from the perspective of his controversial manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). This big cinematic decision was a big risk because Parker was such an unpredictable character. When he appeared on screen, the ever-reliable Hanks exuded a negative and reflective vibe that made him very uncomfortable.

Luckily, Austin Butler was there to dominate and own the big screen with his surprisingly realistic and deeply moving portrayal of Elvis Presley. That first trailer didn't do Butler justice. Now that I've seen the whole film, I can say that King is more than following in his big footsteps. Whether he was singing "If I Can Dream" on a Singer TV special in 1968 or performing "Suspicious Minds" on a stage in Vegas, Butler was definitely morphing into Elvis right before our eyes.

It's the first film to be a clear contender for next year's awards season, including the Oscars. In addition to the anticipated acting nominations for Butler and Hanks, Baz Luhrmann's brilliant direction will be given technical attention to cinematography, film editing, costume design, hair and makeup, and especially the sound. A carefully crafted wall of sound must be heard in the Dolby Theater. 9/10
