Netlfix: Review of THE MAN FROM TORONTO: A Loser's Lot

June 28, 2022

For this year's birthday, Teddy (Kevin Hart) treated his wife Lori (Jasmine Matthews) to a weekend out of town. After dropping Lori off at the spa first, Teddy went to the cabin he had reserved. But since he didn't have a printer, the printout of the title was messy. Teddy is unexpectedly greeted by people who call him the Toronto Man and demand information from the hostage they chained in the basement.

Meanwhile, a real Toronto man (Woody Harrelson) was a killer whose only love was a Dodge 68 Charger. He specialized in torture and intimidation and was known for his brutality and ruthlessness in freeing prisoners. When Toronto saw that the FBI had mistaken Teddy, she convinced Teddy to continue pretending to be her until the end of the whole case.

Kevin Hart played Teddy Jackson as the bad guy he always plays in all his movies. Teddy has been trying to start all kinds of fitness fads online (most recently offline boxing) but nothing has come of it. Tired of Teddy's incompetence, his athletic director Martin (Martin Roach) fires him from his day job. The name Ted is synonymous with corruption. Hart fits this unpleasant role like a glove.

Based on his previous roles, we know that Woody Harrelson can handle tough roles like Toronto. When he shot his first interrogation scene with a deadly set of tools, we believed it. When the story turned into a comedy halfway through, Harrelson didn't seem comfortable. There wasn't much chemistry between Harrelson and Hart, and it was hard to believe that these two guys, Toronto and Teddy, could actually be friends.

As Laura, Jasmine Matthews didn't have much trouble other than being a supportive and forgiving wife. It's amazing how they cast TV star Kaley Cuoco from The Big Bang Theory and Flight Attendant, but inexplicably cast her in a secondary role as Laurie Ann's friend. On the plus side, it was nice to see 80s and 90s movie star Ellen Barkin as Toronto's no-name but stern governor.

Teddy was not a kind person, so it was interesting to see Teddy unknowingly go through wild trials with assassins, the FBI, and Venezuelan tyrants in a desperate attempt to save his marriage from falling apart. But the story of director Patrick Hughes (the last one was "The Assassin's Bodyguard" and its sequel) was not very attractive with mysterious and illogical temptations and unprecedented battles. 4/10.
