HBO Go: Review of PEACEMAKER: Paradoxical Pacifist

In Suicide Squad (2021), after the shocking assassination of Rick Flagg leaves him seriously injured, Peacemaker (John Cena) is forced to join the ARGUS special ops group Project Butterfly to take down the race. aliens seeking world domination. These butterfly-shaped parasites enter humans through cavities in their bodies to control their brains.

Led by Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji), who reports directly to ARGUS manager Angela Waller (Viola Davis), the team members are initially suspicious of each other. Among them are veteran agent Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), tech support John Economas (Steve Agee), and Waller's own rookie lesbian daughter, Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks).

Each episode tells us more about the past of Christopher Smith, the man behind the Peacemaker. He had a traumatic childhood with his sadistic and racist white father Augie Smith (Robert Patrick). Along with a pet eagle (with a cute CG) named Eagle, the Peacemaker also had a sociopath friend who called himself Vigilante (Freddie Strom).

This 8-episode miniseries, also directed by James Gunn, featured the same Rated-R brand of language, violence, gore and humor as the Suicide Squad reboot, with the racial and LGBT inclusivity that was so requested at the time. The fearless and brazen John Cena knew how to penetrate the skin and the emotions of this ironic character, who is not afraid to show extreme brutality to fulfill his mission of keeping the peace.

Unlike the opening credits of other series, this one was too exciting to watch in its entirety and rewatch weekly as the dead actors danced awkwardly to Wig Wham's catchy song "Do Ya Wanna Taste It." The twists of each episode were very interesting and entertaining. There were even some interesting performances in the final, which boosted the score by a whole point. Of course , I look forward to the next season. 8/10.
